How to set-up

1. To start you need a 5x6 square grid board which makes for 30 intersection points.

2. There are 12 game pieces for each player. One player plays white, the other plays black, but any 2 differing colors can be used.

3. Players decide who goes first by any method they prefer. The turns alternate between the players.

How to play

1. The gameboard of Wali....

2. The three-in-a-row must consist of three pieces, no more and no less in, order to allow the player to capture an enemy piece.

3. A player can only drop one piece per turn. Players must continue to drop pieces until they can no longer do so. If a player can no longer drop a piece, that player must pass their turn until the other player can no longer drop a piece also.

How to win

1. The goal of the game is to capture all of your opponent's game pieces.

2. The first player to captures all of his enemy's game pieces is the winner.

Tips & tricks

1. In the beginning the board is empty. The pieces are set beside the board.

2. In the drop phase players drop a piece onto a vacant point on the board that is not orthogonally adjacent to a piece of their own already on the board.

3. Both players are only allowed to move their pieces after both players can no longer continue to drop their pieces in the drop phase.

4. A piece moves one space orthogonally onto a vacant point on the board. If a player forms a three-in-a-row with their own pieces, then the player can remove any one of his opponent's piece from the board.

History

Wali is a 2-player abstract strategy game coming from Africa. It is not known specifically which African country the game originates from. The game is closely related to Dara. The main differences is that in Wali a player cannot drop a piece on the board orthogonally adjacent to one of his or her own piece already on the board.
