How to set-up

1. Vimanam is played on a square track, a tail is linked to the track by a bridge. The bridge also extends into the centre of the track, with two arms coming off the bridge.

2. Vimanam requires six cowrie shells. You can use 6 dice; odd numbers representing 1 and even numbers 0. Moves are calculated as the sum of the dice (1 through 6). 6 even is a move of 12 spaces. Players continue to roll if they roll a 0,1, 5 or 6.

3. Each player selects 6 BEADs the colour of their choice. BEADs start off the board.

4. Players decide who begins the game by rolling a die.

How to play

1. Players must roll a 1 or a 5 to start a BEAD.

2. Players roll to determine how many spaces they can move their BEAD. Only one BEAD can be moved each turn and the BEAD must move the full dice roll or forfeit their turn.

3. Each player starts on opposite ends of the tail and moves their BEADs towards, and then up, the bridge. At the square track, each player turns moving in opposite directions.

4. Once BEADs have circled the track and are back at the bridge, they use the rosettes inside the track to move back onto the bridge, heading towards the centre of the board. Each player turns onto the arm closest to them.

5. Their finishing point is the rosette at the end of the arm.

6. A player cuts their opponent’s BEAD from the board if they land on a space occupied by their opponent. The BEAD is removed from the board requiring the player to start the BEAD again. The player who cut rolls again for another turn.

7. A player must make at least one cut during the game before any of their BEADs can move up the final part of the bridge towards their arm.

8. If a player lands on a square with a rosette, it is safe and cannot be cut.

9. Only 1 BEAD can be on each square.

10. Players must roll an exact throw to move land on the final rosette and finish.

How to win

To win the game, a player must be the first to move all 6 BEADs around the board.
