Felli
Traditional
How to set-up
1. Felli is played on an hourglass-shaped board with 13 points. Lines indicate permitted moves.
2. Each player selects 6 BEADs the colour of their choice.
3. BEADs are placed on the points closest to the player, leaving only the middle point empty.
4. Players decide who begins the game by rolling a die.
How to play
1. In turns, each player moves 1 BEAD along the marked lines to an adjacent empty point.
2. Players capture BEADs by jumping over an opponent’s BEAD and landing on an empty space beyond it, following the lines on the board.
3. Captures can be chained together if, upon jumping over an opponent's BEAD and capturing it, the player is adjacent to another BEAD with an empty space beyond.
4. Players must capture a BEAD, or chain of BEAD captures, if the move is available.
5. Captured BEADs are removed from the board.
How to win
To win the game, a player must capture all their opponent's BEADS.
History
1. Felli is a simple game of strategy from Morocco. It is a two player game where players face each other across an hourglass-shaped board, each player having six pieces set out at the start of the game.
2. Felli originated from Alquerque - first documented in Spain, it spread around the world, and its board adopted different shapes as it did so. In Morocco and in India, hourglass-shaped boards were separately designed.
3. The Moroccan game - Felli is the simplest of all alquerque games, having only thirteen points onto which six pieces per player are set out. The Indian game is larger, with nine pieces per side.
