How to set-up

1. Hyena is played on an 80-space track spiralled towards the centre. The starting area is a village and the middle point is the well.

2. Hyena is traditionally played with marbles. Players can use a die instead.

3. Each player selects a BEAD the colour of their choice. All BEADs start off the board.

4. Additional BEADs are set aside. These are taba BEADs.

5. Players decide who begins the game by rolling a die.

How to play

1. To start, a player’s must roll a 5. On their next turn, they can move their BEAD the number indicated on the die.

2. Players can land on a space occupied by their opponent(s).

3. When a player rolls a 5, they do not move, instead, they collect a taba BEAD.

4. A player’s BEAD must land exactly on the centre space, the well. If they cannot land on the well, the turn is lost. A player can make up the difference in spaces between their BEAD and the well by spending their taba BEADs, one BEAD per space.

5. A player must spend 4 taba BEADs to leave the well. If a player does not have any taba BEADs, they must remain at the well until they have enough to leave.

6. A player’s BEAD must land exactly on the village. If they cannot land on the village, the turn is lost.

7. The first BEAD back to the village wins, but the game continues and the winner can now become a hyena.

8. A hyena BEAD must spend 2 taba BEADs to leave the village.

9. A hyena BEAD moves twice the number on their die.

10. A hyena BEAD cannot move when a 5 is rolled, but collects a taba.

11. A hyena BEAD does not need to land exactly on the well.

12. A hyena BEAD must spend 10 taba BEADs to leave the well.

13. If the hyena BEAD overtakes any player’s BEADs, the player is out of the game.

How to win

1. To win the game, a player must be the first to move their BEAD to the well and the back to the village.

2. When playing with more than two players, the game should continue to decide who can last the longest against the hyena.

History

1. This game comes from Sudan, it's native name is - l'ib el merafib, in English it is often called Hyena.

2. The plot of the game is that each player's mother ( game piece ) must get safely from the start ( aka the village ) around a spiral course to the well at the centre of the board, spend some turns washing clothes there, and then return safely to the village. On the first return of the mother a hyena is unleashed, which may prey on straggling mothers left too far behind.

3. The history behind this game is unknown. It was recorded in 1925 by R. Davies, a British anthropologist and ethnologist working in the Sudan.

4. The game board was traditionally drawn in the sand.
