How to set-up

1. Jul-Gonu is played on a 4-by-4 grid with 16 intersections forming the play spaces. The lines of the grid indicate permitted moves.

2. Each player selects 4 BEADs the colour of their choice.

3. BEADs are placed on the 4 points closest to the player.

4. Players decide who begins the game by rolling a die.

How to play

1. In turns, each player moves a BEAD 1 intersection either horizontally or vertically.

2. BEADs can only move onto empty intersections and cannot jump over another BEAD.

3. A BEAD is captured when it is surrounded on 2 sides (left and right, or top and bottom) by their opponent’s BEADs.

4. A player can capture multiple BEADs when surrounding either side of a line of their opponent’s BEADs.

5. A BEAD can be moved between two opponent’s BEADs without being captured.

6. Captured BEADs are removed from the board.

How to win

To win the game, a player needs to capture all their opponent’s BEADs.

History

1. Jul-Gonu is a two-player abstract strategy board game from Korea.

2. It is one of the many Korean Gonu games.

3. Jul means "lines", and the lines of the board are often drawn on the ground. The game is also referred to as "Ne-Jul-Gonu" , which means "Four Lines Gonu", referring to the four lines in each direction.

4. There are many variants of this game due to regions. They differ in the size of the board, the number of stones, the initial position, etc.
