How to set-up

1. Zamma is played on an 8-by-8 grid. Lines indicate permitted.

2. Each player selects 40 BEADs the colour of their choice.

3. BEADs are placed on every point of the first four rows closets to the player. The additional BEADs are placed on the middle row, starting on the player’s left. This will leave only the middle point empty.

4. Players decide who starts.

How to play

1. In turns, players move a BEAD 1 space in an advancing horizontal or vertical direction. BEADs cannot move backwards.

2. Players capture BEADs by jumping over an opponent’s BEAD and landing on an empty point beyond the opponent’s BEAD.

3. If available, a capture must be made.

4. Captures must be chained together if, upon jumping over an opponent’s BEAD and capturing it, the player is adjacent to an opponent’s BEAD with an empty space beyond it.

5. When a BEAD has moved across the board to the opponent’s starting position it can move in any direction (including backwards) and should be marked.

6. Captured BEADs are removed from the board.

How to win

To win the game, a player needs to capture all their opponent's BEADs.

History

1. Zamma is a variant of the well known Alquerque game. It originates from the Sahara desert, the board was made 4 times larger than Alquerque, each side having 40 men.

2. A difference between this game and Alquerque is that men may only move forwards, or diagonally forwards although they can capture in any direction like in Alquerque. When a piece reaches the last row, it is promoted as in draughts, and may then move in any direction.
